Listowel/Tralee (27) vs Sundays Well (19)

Musgrave Park, 13:00PM

Referee : Bobby Anglim
We were beaten on Saturday despite a heroic performance from the young Well boys. Listowel-Tralee were huge, and travelled with 26 players. Only 1 of their starting team was ‘04 born, all the rest ‘03’s. Whereas 10 of our squad of 16 are 04 born? The age difference was plain to see. Regardless we saw a brave performance from our 16 lads and the result could have gone either way with 15 minutes on the clock and a score line of 19-22 to the visitors. Listowel took the early lead with a try after 8 minutes and another converted try on 12 minutes to leave the score 12-0 to the visitors.  The Well boys fronted up and made a lot of heavy hits with big tackles. After a series of pick and go’s by the forwards Fabien barged over in the right hand corner to leave the score 12-5. The visitors responded with another converted try, 19-5. In the final 10 minutes of the first half it was all Well, dominating possession and resulting in a well executed back line move, finished off with a fine try by Christian Kilbride just inside the left hand touch line. Christian did well to stay in touch. Fabien did well with a big kick to convert it. Half time score 22-12.
Bar a wisely taken penalty by the opposition early in the second half, we kept Listowel-Tralee scoreless for the majority of the second half. Following another spell of Well possession Conor Mackay spotted a gap in the Kerry defence and broke the line to score under the posts, making for an easy conversion. Score 22-19 with 15 minutes to go. It was a nervous finish for coaches and spectators as the play see-sawed from one 22 to the other with a lot of good defence work from both teams preventing the scores. But it was the visitors who scored the next try with just 7 minutes to go leaving an 8 point margin as the conversion hit the upright. Nonetheless our boys never gave up and down to preventing their final attack with a fine tackle and turnover by Jamal well into extra time. Final score 19-27 to Listowel-Tralee.
It was a great performance all around with tries by Fabien, Christian and Conor Mackay. Daniel Buckley slotted in well after just 2 training sessions with us, welcome back Daniel. Due to how thin we were on the ground several players had to play out of position, our full back David Buckley did very well at 10, had a great game, winger/centre Christian Kilbride gave a MOTM performance at full back, with several try saving tackles and many line breaks, prop Leo did well in the back row. Eoin Carmody just back from injury gave a massive performance leading the pack and turning over possession on several occasions. Eoghan Mackay and Ben Stokes put in a huge no. of big hits as did Adam McCarthy. Ewan as usual was great in the air, stealing their line out ball on a few occasions and at the breakdown. Our 2 hookers, Eoin A and Eoin O, both shared game time with good dart throwing at line out time and we won all our own scrums against a much larger pack. Jack Morrissy played his first full game of the season and survived against the huge Listowel props. And wing back Conor Hurley came off a flight back from New York at 5.00am on the morning of the game. Overall it was a great team response after the poor performance in Cobh especially with the squad hit by injuries (3), sickness (2) and 2 away.
We have Cobh in the next round, 12.30pm next Saturday in Cobh.
