Sundays Well () vs Old Christians RFC ()

Rathcooney, 10:30AM

The under nines were operating with a squad much reduced due to a combination of holidays, Munster match etc etc for the match against Old Christians. The Easter eggs were well and truly eaten in time for the action on a perfect morning for rugby. The warm up went well with the help of John and Rory, Sam’s younger brother who stood in to balance up the numbers for tackle practice. Definitely one for the future there !

The parents were in full voice supporting the lads cheered up by some sun for the first time this season. The game was sorted and the coach was relieved of all selection choices and the team pretty much picked itself. Aaron offered to play in the centres and showed that he could mix it with runners by grabbing a couple of early scores. Adam, Joe and Aaron set the scrum and were aggressive at the breakdown. Aaron got over his sun burn to make a few mazy runs and add to his growing season tally of tries. The backs had Nicolas at scrum half and Fergal out half in a play to spread the ball wide of the Christians pack. Aaron and Sam enjoyed the extra bit of space and linked well with the supporting pack. Old Christians had a bigger squad and the Well lads needed to dig deep to playing a the high tempo. Some poor tackling cost us a few tries as Christians found their form. The last third saw the Well lads regrouping and some high quality tries followed. Sam got a beauty when a Campese like change of pace produced a long run in. Nicholas produced a great break and Adam was on his shoulder to follow off the move. Fergal took a few hard tackles and was involved mixed his game up well with the other backs. Joe produced a few trade mark drives which took a few tacklers to hold up. “Pump the legs” was heard from the side lines. The passing and team work is coming together and the lads definitely stood up to be counted when needed. There was plenty of sore and tired bodies when the referee called a halt to a very sporting and close match. The Well probably edged it but there was plenty of encouragement for both teams.
